February 5th, 2012 It was a little tougher bite for us this weekend, But not a total bust. As of right now we're still about 3.5 miles out in around 14.5 ft of water. The fishing has been pretty spotty with lots of lookers and the occasional aggressive fish showing up on the graphs. We had some guys who we're very ambitious and punched some holes along the rough ice bands and ended up doing pretty good despite the slow bite. From talking to the guys more fish are being caught jigging rather than dead sticking. We are still seeing some nice perch being pulled in and the occasional pike being caught. Good luck and be safe guys. Matt.

Hi ladies and gents! This past Thursday the bite really picked up for us, which was a breath of fresh air after a slow 2 weeks. I took a nasty spill on the ice late in the afternoon Thursday and was laid up for the weekend after a ER trip. I did manage to get out Sunday morning to see what everyone was catching them on. Green demons, perch colored rattling spoons and plain hooks is the word I got from the guys. Today I was able to do a little fishing with my fiancé and we picked off a few perch and a couple keeper walleyes in a little over an hour. We are still currently fishing the mud flats in 14.5 ft of water. What we have found is that if we fish the piled ice banks we are seeing more bait fish and thus more walleyes and perch. The perch bite has been the best that I can remember on Upper Red. The walleyes were a little slow today but I hope they pick back up for this coming weekend. I am hoping my back will permit me to start drilling some holes and getting on a hot bite for everyone that is coming up this week and weekend. any questions on what I see they're hitting on or any thing else give me a shout.

Hi guys a fishing report here! Fishing is still on the slower side. Over the weekend it was very hit our miss with some shacks doing very well and some not so good. Fish are being caught on a wide variety of presentations from flyer's and buck shots for jigging, to frostees and plain red hooks tipped with a fat head for the dead sticks. We currently have our houses spread out from about 12ft of water with a hard btm near the transition zone to 15ft of water in the mud flats. Both are showing fishing potential with our house placement needing to be more precise in the hard btm areas. The perch bite has continued to be a nice added bonus to the gals and guys trying to snag a tight lipped walleye! I scouted hard today in depths ranging from 8ft out to 16ft of water with most of my personal success being in the 12.5ft hard btm area, I did tie into a nice batch of perch in the 15.5ft mud flats though . I placed some seasonal guys in a fishy area in about 12ft of water this morning and they had some success, a few walleyes and even a couple crappies and a nice pike to boot. I still haven't figured out exactly where our fleet will end up for the weekend. Time will tell as we continue to search for the best fishing opportunity for you guys and gals! Thanks, Matt
January 16, 2012 Fishing report from the last few days Hello Fishermen, The past weekend was on the slow side with the walleyes being a bit tight lipped. We are currently set up in the 14.5 ft mark with mud btm. From my observations the guys really working the jigs and watching the graphs produced more fish. All in all it was our toughest bite of the season so far. I have some time in the next couple days to try and find a few more fish for this coming weekend. Good luck! Matt

Fishing report from the last few days. After a phenomenal bite Wednesday afternoon through early Friday fishing has slowed down a bit. I moved a few shacks out deeper in the 13.5 ft range in a attempt to locate some more aggressive fish and we'll find out how they fared in the morning. Good luck guys and girls Matt!

Happy New Year ! Fishing was a hair on the slower side this past weekend. The walleyes were biting a little on the soft side and the guys and gals that had the patients to let them take it a bit longer fared well, (I seemed to be lacking in patience this weekend). On a good note we have started pushing out into the mud and started slamming them again this afternoon. The eyes are still a bit finicky with the occasional one that comes in and just slams the bait! I hope the fishing continues to be good, the wind today certainly did not turn them off. I've seen fish caught on a wide variety of presentations from jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head jigged wildly to a set line with a red hooked tipped with a fat head. Good luck Matt
December 29, 2011 Merry Christmas and Happy New Years everyone! We are still as I type this fishing the shore line in the 9-11ft range with a firm btm. Fishing has been above average the last week with it slowly tapering down the last couple days. I have been doing some scouting when I get a chance out deeper. The fishing looks promising ! Today I had some luck on my side and managed to find a nice little spot in about 12ft which still was a little firm on the btm and managed to nail about 15 fish in 25 minutes. I'm going to keep exploring tomorrow and if the bite doesn't start picking back up on the shoreline this is where we are headed. good luck out there and be safe! Matt
December 21, 2011 Hi everyone, Fishing has been pretty good the last couple days. There doesn't seem to be a specific time they are biting, one day it's a afternoon bite the next a morning bite our in the middle of the night. Most people are having more success dead sticking versus jigging.
We are currently fishing in front of Sunny Beach. Ice conditions seem to be looking pretty good everywhere I've checked with 12-14 inches of ice. Be safe out there Matt
December 18, 2011 Well the ice fishing season is now in full swing and the fishing has been pretty darn good! We're fishing 8 to 11 feet of water with a sandy hard btm with a few rocks scattered about. The eyes have been a little shy during the daylight hours with reports that dead sticking is the best option. I've personally had good success jigging with green buckshots and red lindy flying rattling spoons tipped with a minnow head. There's been a good night bite with the eyes becoming more active. There is still a few openings left so book now! Good luck and be safe I've found 12 inches of ice everywhere I've checked Matt
December 1st 2011 Fishing report. Guys have been walking out and doing well in 8ft of water with reports of 6 inches of ice. Our plan of attack for the early ice season is to run houses off Sunny Beach as well as along the rez line. We hope to be able to start moving houses onto fish within the next couple weeks. The houses are ready as well as our plow trucks! We still have openings for a few weekends and during the week but they're filling up so make your reservations. For reservations and prices give Jerry a call at (218)647-8673. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the ice this year. the guys at Battle River! Matt, Jerry and Mike.
Here's some quotes from satisfied customers.
From Rob Cook crew
Once again Matt and Jerry have made for another great weekend
fishing trip. Our group came in with 40 walleyes with only a
handful going back. He got us in and set up checked on us
multiple times and moved us from the city of houses out to a
spot all by ourselves. The move was great we were pulling in
fish before we were banked up and had walleyes that were hitting
in the same hole one right after the other. We rebaited and
snagged another before the bobber hit the slip not. If we needed
something from the store they would bring it out to the ice for
us. ------------------------------------------------------------------ "I was up on red this week for a couple of days Wednesday the
fishing was steady all day with fish coming in not all were
caught but the action was good for me. Thursday morning was
slower but the fish were larger. I think it was a good couple of
days. The main reason I am posting though is because one of my
friend who lives in the area hooked us up with a local outfitter
Matt Smischney's who runs battle river rentals. These guys have
a classy operation going. They had us on the fish and were
willing to move us if we wanted. The house we used was a brand
new wheel house and the four of us fished in comfortably no
problem. Matt also has other wheel houses all newer and very
clean no rodents or garbage like some of the other outfitters
I've used up there on Red in the past. Any body looking for a
good affordable outfitter get a hold of Matt Smischney's check
out there web sight battle river rentals you wont be
disappointed. Good luck fisherman and women" |
